Minnesota Vikings player Percy Harvin collapsed on the practice field on August 19th and according to NBC his heart stopped for 10 seconds after he was taken to a hospital. At first complications from his frequent migraine headaches were suspected.
However, a few days after being released from the hospital Harvin underwent an overnight sleep study which he said showed his heart stopped beating eight times during the test. He was diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea following the test results. Harvin told NBC that the sleep disorder was “the main issue triggering the migraines”. The football player is now sleeping with a positive air pressure machine (CPAP) that regulates his breathing during sleep. He also stated that he has stopped taking medication for the migraines.
Sleep apnea is not uncommon among football players who, despite their excellent physical condition, often have a high BMI (body mass index) score and a large neck measurement. Both are common in sleep apnea patients. Mr. Harvin will now have to take his CPAP machine on the road in order to continue treating his sleep apnea and hopefully he will be able to utilize the machine on a regular basis.
Unfortunately, most patients suffering from obstructive sleep apnea have a hard time sleeping with the CPAP machine. Either the mask or tubing is uncomfortable or causes claustrophobic feelings, or the noise of the machine is an issue. For some the dry throat and sinus problems cause them to stop using the machine. Left untreated, sleep apnea can cause heart attack, stroke or even death.
If you are suffering from sleep apnea and are unable to use the CPAP machine there is an alternative other than surgery. Oral appliance therapy is an approved, effective treatment for mild to moderate sleep apnea. Oral appliances are also approved for serious sleep apnea sufferers who cannot tolerate CPAP treatment.
