Is It Better To Brush Or Floss First?

It seems like a simple thing – we tell everyone to brush and floss in order to keep their teeth healthy. But is it better to brush first and then floss, or should you floss first and then brush?Toothbrush, with floss and towels

I’m happy whenever my patients are flossing so I’m not going to complain about when! But for those of you who really want to do the best job possible with your home oral hygiene care here are some tips:

  • Floss first, then brush your teeth. The floss removes the debris between teeth so your toothbrush can wash it away.
  • Take it easy with the toothpicks. If you don’t have floss handy then a toothpick can remove food that is stuck between teeth. However, it is very easy to damage your gums with toothpicks so be gentle and don’t get in the habit of chewing on toothpicks after a meal – it is a piece of wood after all!
  • Got gastric reflex? GERD sufferers need to be aware that the acid that is causing you pain is also harming your teeth. Talk to your dentist about protecting your teeth from acid erosion.
  • Replace your toothbrush every three months or more if it looks worn. If your toothbrush bristles are looking worn before three months you may be pressing too hard when you brush. Harder is not better when it comes to cleaning your teeth. A gentle brushing for two minutes, two times each day will keep your tooth enamel intact.
  • Can’t brush? Try chewing sugarless gum containing xylitol. The chewing action helps clean teeth, saliva flow is stimulated which helps wash away debris and stabilize oral pH levels and the xylitol has been shown to arrest grown of oral bacteria.
