Brushing Saves Your Heart

Several studies have been released over the past several years that prove the link between gum disease and heart problems.  Now it seems that people who brush their teeth less than twice a day have nearly 3 times the risk of heart disease.  The new study, led by Richard Watt from University College London studies data from over 11,000 people who participated in the Scottish Health Survey.

The researchers looked at behaviors including smoking, lifestyle and oral health habits.  When the researchers looked for other cardiovascular risk factors like smoking, family health history, overweight, etc. they found that those who brushed their teeth less frequently had a 70% increased risk of heart disease than those who brushed at least twice a day.   The researchers are planning more studies to discover whether the poor oral health care caused the heart problems or if it is another risk factor like smoking and being overweight.

While the upcoming studies will be interesting, the information that doctors and dentists have now shows conclusively that inflammation in the mouth causes damage throughout the body.  If you have heart disease or have a family history of heart disease it is extremely important that your mouth be kept as healthy as possible.  Gum disease can be controlled and treated and is a risk factor that is easily prevented.  Dr. Mark Levy will be happy to discuss your risk factors and create a plan for your optimal oral health.
