Alzheimer's and Your Dental Health

Want to reduce your risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease? A new study suggests that people with poor oral health or gum disease may be more likely to develop this devastating disease.oral cancer exam

The research examined brain samples from ten patients without dementia and ten patients who had suffered from dementia. The researchers found evidence of the bacterium Porphyromonas gingivalis in the brains of the patients suffering from dementia. This bacterium is associated with chronic gum disease and can enter the bloodstream through activities such as eating or brushing teeth. The researchers believe that every time this bacterium reaches the brain it triggers immune system responses, causing the body to release chemicals that kill neurons.

This research adds to the growing body of scientific studies that link a healthy mouth to better overall health. Gum disease and oral bacteria have been linked to heart disease, diabetes, lung infections and even low birth weight babies.

Regularly brushing, flossing and visiting the dental hygienist for professional cleanings can keep your mouth and your body healthy. So what are you waiting for?
