How Sleep Apnea Affects Your Health

Obstructive sleep apnea is a disease that is both under-diagnosed and under-treated. Untreated obstructive sleep apnea has many effects on your health and quality of life.

Which of these common effects are you experiencing?

  • Headaches
  • Depression
  • Weight gain
  • Inflammation and chronic pain
  • Nighttime bathroom visits
  • Heart palpitations and arrhythmias
  • Poor memory and decision making
  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease and stroke
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Increased risk for auto accidents

Treatment of obstructive sleep apnea usually begins with CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure). CPAP delivers pressurized air through a mask and hose to keep the sleeper breathing throughout the night. While this is the gold standard for treating sleep apnea about half of all patients cannot tolerate the machine and masks. Patients are considered CPAP compliant if they wear the apparatus for only 4 or more hours each night – still leaving half the night untreated.

Patients who are CPAP intolerant can successfully treat their sleep apnea using an oral appliance created by a dentist specially trained in Dental Sleep Medicine. In Columbus, OH sleep apnea patients are treated by Dr. Mark Levy of StoneRidge Dental Care.

Please contact Dr. Levy’s office at 614-476-6696 today to schedule your consultation to see if you are a candidate for oral appliance therapy. You can have a good night’s sleep and treat your sleep apnea effectively.
