Menopause and Your Smile

Beyond the hot flashes, memory loss and mood swings, the hormonal changes that happen during menopause affect parts of your body you never thought about. Case in point, menopausal women are more likely to have high amounts of plaque buildup and are at a higher risk for tooth loss according to researchers from the Cleveland Clinic and Case Western Reserve University. Researchers suggest that women over the age of 50 should have more than two dental checkups and hygiene visits per year to maintain their oral health.

All of the study participants practiced good oral hygiene but had abnormally high levels of plaque buildup. Plaque is a substance that forms on teeth and leads to periodontal disease and possible tooth loss. About half of the women in the study were on biophospohonate therapy to prevent bone loss but lead researcher, Leena Palomo, said that more frequent dental cleanings are needed and that the biophosphonate therapy may not sufficiently maintain jaw bone health. Dental visits of four times per year were suggested.

If you are currently experiencing menopausal symptoms you are aware of the many changes occurring in your body. No matter how perfect your home care, hormonal fluctuations at this time of life do affect your oral health. Plan to visit your dental hygienist about every three months to maintain a healthy smile.
