Oral, head and neck cancer refers to a variety of cancers that develop in the head and neck region. Since this is Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week I thought some additional information on the subject would be useful.
Common warning signs are:
Other warning signs that occur during later stages of the disease include:
Most of these cancers are linked to smoking and other tobacco use. Using alcohol along with tobacco products seems to be particularly risky. While most of these cancers are diagnosed in patients over the age of 40, a disturbing number of young people have been diagnosed with oral and throat cancers related to the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV).
Prevention and early detection are key! Don’t use tobacco, limit alcohol intake and eat a diet that includes lots of fruits and vegetables (these tips will protect you from most cancers and other chronic diseases as well). Get screened on a regular basis – this means visiting your dentist regularly for a comprehensive dental examination. A cancer screening is always included in these visits and is very important. Early detection saves lives and limits the damage and disfigurement this disease can cause.
In the Columbus area you can schedule your screening by contacting StoneRidge Dental Care at 614-476-6696. If you are experiencing any of the warning signs listed above please don’t delay.
