No matter where you go today there seems to be antiseptic wipes or germ-killing gels placed for your protection. We wipe down the shopping carts at the grocery store and clean the TV remotes with alcohol wipes in the hopes we are protecting ourselves from germs.
The makers of Listerine and Reach oral rinse products recently completed a survey about Americans and how they feel about germs. The most amazing thing – while 80% of people are concerned about the germs on their hands only 66% worry about the germs in their mouths!
Americans also showed a surprising disconnect between what they feel needs to be done to keep their oral health in top shape versus what they actually do. 95% of the people surveyed said that more than just toothbrushing is needed to keep teeth and gums healthy, but only 1/3 floss and only 1/2 visit the dentist every six months.
Germs in the mouth multiply quickly and many of these germs have been linked to chronic diseases affecting our overall health such as heart disease and diabetes. Good oral health care including brushing, flossing and making those dental appointments a priority can lead to better overall health.
