Did you know that squamous cell cancer of the tongue has been rising in younger Americans 18 to 44 years of age? The largest increase seems to be among young women. The researchers noted that historically, cancers of the oral cavity were associated with older men who had a history of smoking and alcohol use (like actor Michael Douglas). During the past 30 years these types of cancers have been declining but other types have been rising among younger patients.
Head researcher, Dr. Bhisham Chera said that said that they are unsure of the reasons for the rise. “our findings suggest that the epidemiology of this cancer in young white females may be unique and that the causative factors may be things other than tobacco and alcohol abuse.” He went on “Based on our observations and the published data, it appears that these cases may not be associated with the human papillomavirus . We are actively researching other causes of this cancer in this patient population.”
