Prevent Tooth Decay

Yes, it is possible to prevent tooth decay!images_021

Tooth decay happens when the sugars and starches in our food stick to our teeth. These carbohydrates provide a feast for the bad oral bacteria that cause tooth decay. These bacteria secrete acids which soften dental enamel. The bacteria, acid and saliva combine to form a sticky plaque that adheres to the  teeth. The acids in the plaque dissolve the enamel and create cavities.

Preventing cavities means:

  • Getting rid of plaque which means brushing and flossing
  • Fluoride toothpaste helps harden dental enamel
  • Floss!
  • Eat healthier snacks. Avoid candy, crackers, pretzels and sodas. If you have eaten these items rinse your mouth or brush after eating.
  • Drink fluoridated water. Tap water contains fluoride and most bottled waters do not.
  • Chew sugar-free gum containing xylitol. Research has shown xylitol stunts bacterial growth.

Not all tooth decay can be prevented, but we can keep trying.

Will you know if you develop tooth decay? No, until decay is very advanced there are no outward symptoms. The best way to catch tooth decay in its early, easily treatable stages is to schedule regular dental appointments. Every time you come for a dental hygiene appointment we scan for signs of decay. Much decay is not detectable by the naked eye and so every so often we do need to take x-rays.

The materials used to restore a tooth that has been damaged by decay are a far cry from the ones used only a few years ago. Most dental practices no longer use mercury based amalgam fillings which are dangerous for the environment and people. Modern restorative materials are tooth colored and long lasting – you’ll never know that you had a filling done!
