Save Your Heart – Treat Your Gums Right

The link between gum disease and cardiovascular problems has been well established by scientific research. The gum disease causes an inflammatory response in the body and inflammation is linked to atherosclerosis and can increase the risk of heart attack and stroke. The bacteria commonly found in gum infections have been discovered in plaques in coronary arteries.

The good news is that dental infections can be avoided with proper oral hygiene care and if an infection is already present, it can be treated thus lowering your risk of heart disease.

So how can you avoid gum disease? First, start by taking proper care of their teeth and gums at home – that means flossing EVERY day and brushing at least twice each day for two minutes each time. You will need to visit your dentist for a professional cleaning at least every six months. You may need to have a professional cleaning every three months if you have certain risk factors for gum disease.

The risk factors for gum disease include smoking, a poor diet and certain medications. Existing conditions such as pregnancy or Type 2 diabetes also increase your risk of developing gum disease.

Keep your heart and gums healthy. If it has been a while since your last dental hygiene appointment please contact our Columbus area office at 614-476-6696 to schedule your visit.
